Maritime investments with 28% net profit per year: an analysis by Mestex Shipping

The shipping industry is the lifeblood of the global economy. According to ICS, the international shipping industry is responsible for the carriage of around 90 percent of world trade. There are roughly 50,000 merchant ships registered in over 150 nations manned by over a million seafarers generating over a half-trillion dollars per year in freight rates.

The international shipping industry offers investment opportunities. Revenue oriented maritime asset investments through the years, offer a unique combination of benefits. Mestex Shipping explains how investors can build exposure to their portfolios.

International container rates on fire

Containers have wrestled the ocean-shipping headlines away from tankers and bulkers as stratospheric China-to-California box rates approach $4,035 per forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU). Container shipping, declares a glowing new report by Fearnleys Securities, is “the unsung hero” (one who does great deeds but receives little or no recognition for them).

US import spike could boost shares of box-ship owners

How can investors expose themselves to this historic trans-Pacific rate spike? Can box stocks woo tanker and bulker shareowners? And what do the curiously low prices of some container equities say about sentiment toward a U.S. recovery?

The response is to highlight significant differences between investing in container shipping versus bulk commodity shipping. An experienced operator, like Mestex shipping, can point to opportunities for investors and traders to ride today’s container wave.

After a tough 2020, sector analysts say that 2021 macro dynamics are set to reward shipping investors and traders.

Container Sale & Purchase

There is no pause for breath in the S&P market as buying interest from liners keeps flooding in. All those returning from Christmas and New Year’s holidays in the belief that the market will slowly ignite after the festive break were captured on the wrong feet. It was rather a kickstart as buyers across all segments kept turning every stone to secure more ships, while price levels continued to climb steadily in the smaller segments and rising strongly for post-panamax tonnage.

Let’s name just a few examples of prices:

  • 10 year-old 6,600 TEU ships were increasing by $ 5 mill. to $ 33-35 mill.
  • 10-year old 4,250 TEU types gained $ 3.5 mill. to $ 22-24 mill.
  • 5 year-old wide-beam 2,700 TEU ships were lifted by $ 3 mill. to $ 24- 25 mill.

All told, more than 50 container ships were committed in January – more than double the amount of January last year.
