Ukraine is the first world producer of sunflower seeds and will increase by 7% its plantations

 The Ukrainian lands sowed with sunflower will grow by 7% compared to 2019.


Ukraine is the first world producer of sunflower seeds, used as a raw material to extract edible oil. The second one is Russia in the world. The two Countries produce almost half of the world sunflower seeds.

The sunflower “cake”, that is what remains after the seeds have been processed into oil, is a nutritious feed for livestock. The Chinese use the fibres from the stem of the sunflower for fabric and paper.

In this production season, 5.62 mln ha of sunflower were sown, that is 91% of the planned 6.2 mln ha in Ukraine. The sown area under sunflower will grow by 7% from 2019 (5.81 mln ha). Sunflower sown areas in Kirovohrad region will be the largest in Ukraine. As of May 14, producers in the region planted 604.4 thou. ha or 98% of the planned sunflower areas.

  • Zaporizhzhya: 577.13
  • Kharkov: 564.12
  • Mykolaiv: 540.25
  • Luhansk: 392.39
  • Poltava: 347.58
  • Kherson: 323.39
  • Odessa: 306.9
  • Vinnytsya: 285.1
